Little® Parachoc

Little® Parachoc

Little® Parachoc is a gentle stool softener that contains liquid paraffin for the medical treatment of constipation.

It works by gently lubricating the bowel wall and softening the faecal mass. This makes the stool easier to pass and helps children achieve bowel movement.

Little® Parachoc has a pleasant chocolate vanilla flavour and can be mixed with cold milk, cold flavoured drinks and yogurt.

Dosage

Every patient has their own individual dose requirement for Little® Parachoc.

Adequate dosage is that dose which produces one soft motion without leakage of liquid paraffin. Increase or decrease the daily dose in 5 mL graduations until desired effect is achieved.

AgeHow MuchHow Often

7 year – 12 years20 mL

Because Little® Parachoc is not a bowel stimulant, patients must be aware that it can take up to 4 days for a change in dose to work. Therefore the new daily dose must be maintained for at least that time to assess how effective the change is. Further alteration may be necessary, and similarly a 4 day period should be allowed to assess that change before any further alterations in dose are made.

If symptoms persist seek medical advice.

Little® Parachoc FAQs

My child had 15mL of Parachoc yesterday and has still not had a bowel movement?

As a stool softener/lubricant laxative, Parachoc will start to lubricate and soften the stools straight away but it won’t have the same immediate results as a stimulant laxative. Allow 3 to 4 days for the recommended dose to take effect. Adjust the dose up or down by 5mL increments according to the bowel movement type and frequency.

There is a strange oily/orange/yellow type substance in my child’s underwear/stools?

This is excess oil leakage and is a normal occurrence that indicates that the dosage is too high. Reduce the dose by 5mL and wait 3-4 days to see the full effects of the dose before adjusting again if necessary.
Note: Adjust up or down in 5mL increments, each time waiting 3-4 days for full effects to be seen before adjusting again if required.

My child doesn’t like the taste, can I mix it with anything?

Yes: Milk, Yoghurt (YOGO), Milo (room temp but not hot), add to ice cream.

The Parachoc is very thick and lumpy and will not pour very well?

We recommend that customers shake well before each use. In colder conditions, the product can become very thick and so needs to be shaken even more (same is true if it has been stored in the fridge).

When I pour the Parachoc it seems to be 2 different colours/separated?

The product contains 50% Liquid Paraffin which is an oil so the product needs to be shaken vigorously before use.

Is it ok for my child to lie down and watch TV within 2 hours of taking the Parachoc?

No. After administering Little® Parachoc do not lie your child down for at least 2 hours.

What is the problem with lying down within 2hrs of taking Parachoc?

There is an increased risk of aspiration (paraffin oil being regurgitated and inhaled into the lungs).

How will I know if my child has aspirated the product?

They may have difficulty breathing but if you have any concerns or suspect it has occurred, it is best to call the Poisons Information line.

Is there a particular time I should give my child the Parachoc dosage / how many doses a day should I give them?

As long as Parachoc is taken at least 2 hours prior to lying down or going to sleep, Parachoc can be taken at any time of the day. Parachoc should be given in a once daily dosage.

Is this product nut and wheat free?

This product is free from nuts and wheat.

Does Parachoc contain any animal ingredients?

Parachoc does not contain animal or animal derived ingredients

How many grams of carbs are in a 10mL serve of Parachoc?

In short, if we minus out the ingredients that are expected to have zero carbs, for example Water, Paraffin etc. and consider ingredients such as the flavours to be pure carbs; 10mL of Parachoc may contain up to 0.00006g carbs.

Why does the packaging state Keep Out of Reach of Children?

The Parachoc product and packaging is compliant with regulations. We have included the “Keep out of Reach of Children” statement as a piece of advice to parents as the Chocolate Vanilla flavour can be very appealing to some children.
